You are all invited to the Oldbury Writing Group’s 2nd Birthday Party
Saturday 20th August 2016 at Oldbury Library between 11am – 1.30pm
The Oldbury Writing group is celebrating our 2nd birthday by hosting a party. There will be drinks (hot and soft only), nibbles, a tombola, a birthday card competition, games, and the all important Birthday cake. We did think about having a theme but decided against it and just have a normal, regular birthday party. Normal, what is that word? It is a word that definitely does not describe the Oldbury Writing Group at all. Normal!
Have you ever wanted to join a writing group, but you don’t know what to expect when you get there? Do you have a stereotypical view of a writing group that the leader makes you write things you don’t want to write and therefore you have given yourself the excuse of, ‘I haven’t got the time for that nonsense, I have enough of my own stuff to do?’ Well, with the OWG, you could not be more wrong.
The OWG is there to support writers in their own writings. We encourage one another to enter competitions or submit to different places, and if one of us gets published, or wins, we all celebrate as a group. Now we have reached our second year together, and we want to celebrate it with you.
Yes, there is the odd assignment, but it is not essential that you take part in them. These assignments are designed to help nurture the imagination and improve on writing skills. If you are like some of our members that believe you don’t need to do them, then you don’t have to. They are all done in your own time anyway, so, whatever it is you write it does not matter, as long as you write.
Writing does not always come easily to people, sometimes you need inspiration, we all do. That is why we go on trips together to find inspiration and learn new skills. So far, we have been to places like museums, writing festivals, Haden Hill House, author and poetry events and the theatre. Sometimes, we put on our own events like The Mad Hatter’s Tea Party Book Festival, book launches, charity events and this, our birthday party.
Angela, the Leader of the OWG, firmly believes that with the right support anyone can be a writer. It is not something that happens overnight. Sometimes it can take years to write a book, but Rome was not built in a day. Besides, short stories can be equally exciting, if not more so in some respects and they can be written in days. Some of the best poems and drabbles (100-word stories) ever written was done so in five minutes.
So, come along to our birthday party and enjoy the experience of the O.W.G. Come and get some birthday cake, nibbles, and drinks. Bring your kids, let them have fun with party games like musical statues and pass the parcel. There will be a tombola too, and a Birthday Card competition. It is set to be a fun day, and it would be great to see you.
